On The First Day Of Spring

March 30, 2015

It’s the first day of spring today – from tomorrow onwards, the days grow longer than the nights, and we can all look forward to warm evenings and sunny days in our gardens. It’s the perfect time to celebrate by giving your garden a bit of a makeover.

Whilst you may have long-term plans in place for your garden, and you probably already have a spring gardening to do list, there are a number of quick fixes that can help you bring your garden into the new season.

Splashes of Spring Colour

It may yet be too early for many of the pretty flowers in your garden to show their faces – and with the vagaries of the British weather there’s no telling when most of them will actually come out. In the meantime, however, you can bring a splash of colour into your garden by painting plant pots and fences, and adding decorative features to your walls and trellises.

Disguise Bare Areas

You’re likely to have several bare spots in your garden where nothing is growing yet – perhaps where you plan to plant something later in the year. Rather than have them sitting quite so obviously bare, you can use those painted plant pots to disguise the empty spots. Naturally, if you have planted something here that just hasn’t come through yet, this will be a case of arranging pots around the empty spot, not placing them on top!

Prepare a Garden Room

While it is now spring, that doesn’t mean that it’s warm yet. If you want to enjoy your garden this early in the year, you may need both heating and lighting. If you have a large garden, then creating a smaller space within it makes it much easier to heat. You can use reclaimed timber or fencing to create walls which will reflect the warmth from your chiminea or patio heater, rather than allowing it to dissipate around the entire garden. These walls can be decorated with pretty outdoor fairy lights for a soft glow as the evening draws in. Then all you have to do is set out your luxury garden furniture and relax!
