How to Host the Perfect Spring Garden Party

How to Host the Perfect Spring Garden Party

March 30, 2015

So spring is here at last! There are daffodils by the hedgerow, clusters of snowdrops at the side of streams, plenty of buds on the trees and the hawthorn leaves are bursting forth, and this is something that gets us very excited. Spring means more sun, more daylight and more parties! This year, instead of leaving the parties for the kitchen, conservatory or your local hall, you should make the most of your outdoor space and transform your garden into a delightful wonderland, which will be guaranteed to enchant and entertain.

Theme

Firstly, a lot of garden parties have themes, although yours could simply be a garden theme or spring time. If you do
opt for a theme though, this then allows you to tailor your decorations, food and entertainment. Themes you could use include picking a colour scheme and tailoring furniture and decorations; for example, black and gold. You could also celebrate a national event such as May Day or the World Cup. Some of the best garden parties follow a fantasy theme, such as Alice and Wonderland, Cinderella or another fairytale theme.

Atmosphere

In order to create atmosphere you will need decorations, lighting and music. The first thing to do is consider a power supply, as you will need this for the speakers, lighting and possible entertainment; especially if you’ve booked live music. Make sure the power cables you use are waterproof, and if you are using expensive electrical equipment such as a sound system or amps then house them under a gazebo. White canvas gazebos can look a bit garish, but adorn them with a string of fairy lights, and create curtains from sheer fabric to make them blend in with the natural surroundings.

Furniture

The furniture is essential at a garden party, as it provides both practical surfaces for placing food and comfortable areas to relax. Firstly, you should decide where to put the furniture; it will sit best on the area with flattest terrain, and if you have a patio then this is perfect. Arrange the chairs and tables in clusters so people can mingle; although if you are having live entertainment you may want to configure things in a horseshoe shape facing the performance area. At Verdon Grey, our ranges of all weather garden furniture are ideal for stylish garden gatherings in any season.

Food

There are two main solutions to garden party food. The first is to lay out a wide selection of “here’s-one-I-made-earlier” finger foods, so that you are free to relax during the event, or you take up your tongs and spatula and serve up a hot-off-the-plate barbeque. Barbeques are fun to cook, but mean you will probably be the last to eat as you’ll be occupied with cooking for everyone else. With a buffet you can offer plenty of variety; think fresh salads, chicken wings, potato wedges and samosas. For pudding, providing fruit kebabs and hiring a chocolate fountain will go down a storm. Don’t forget to cover any fresh food with netting to keep away the flies.

The ideal garden party is well thought through with delightful little touches such as lanterns in trees, fun games like a treasure hunt and delicious food. The atmosphere should be soothing and you should get things well organised, so that you too can relax and enjoy the afternoon or evening.
