How to Attract Wildlife to your Contemporary Garden

How to Attract Wildlife to your Contemporary Garden

May 08, 2015

Nowadays, the garden is becoming an increasingly popular place to spend some time with your friends and family. Why not take this opportunity to invite some more friends into your garden space- in the form of wildlife!

Encouraging wildlife to come into your garden is an integral part of keeping your garden looking fresh and beautiful. In this post, we are going to list some ideas that you can incorporate into your garden to help re-introduce some helpful wildlife to your garden space!

Choice of Flowers

You want to encourage insects to come into your garden so that they can pollinate. Without insects such as bees and butterflies, flowers would begin to die off as there would be nothing to help them with their pollination.

To encourage more of these helpful insects into your garden environment, try choosing flowers that produce a lot more pollen and nectar, as well as flowers that bloom at different stages throughout the year to ensure that the insects can keep coming back all year round.

Plant Some Trees!

As well as providing some privacy and shade to your garden, trees are also an excellent addition to attract more wildlife into your grounds.

Trees provide shelter and a nesting site for a wide variety of wildlife; from insects to birds and sometimes even small mammals squirrels. They can also provide food in the form of fruit and seeds which will encourage wildlife to stay in the area where they have a food source.

Trees also provide a safe haven for some animals that may otherwise be hunted if they were to nest or spend most of their time on the ground.

Add a Water Feature

We’re not necessarily talking about a huge water spewing, geyser fountain; a simple pool of water can do wonders for inviting a wider range of wildlife into your garden.

Try and let the water do its own thing when it comes to colonising with plants and wildlife. Don’t introduce fish as they will scare away possible wildlife that may come to take advantage of your water feature. Let plants and algae grow on their own and they will attract the wildlife on their own!

Always make sure there is a slanted side to any water feature that you install, no matter how shallow it is to begin with. A lot of amphibians like much shallower water than expected, and we want them to be able to come and go as they please- not be prisoners in our water features!

Leave It Alone!

We’re not saying let your garden become an overgrown mess, but maybe set aside one part of your space to be a bit wild.

Leaving planks of dead wood or creating a rockery that you let nature take care of will encourage all sorts of wildlife to come and take up residence in your garden.

From beetles and other insects to small mammals such as mice and hedgehogs; old logs and rockeries provide an excellent shelter and possible hibernation sites for these animals where they won’t be disturbed at all.

Adding this kind of feature to your garden can add a certain rustic and wild element to a garden, but they can also be easily hidden away in an unseen part of the garden where they can’t be disturbed or seen by anyone.

And that’s it! Its super simple to get more wildlife into your garden, but remember- patience is key. The wildlife will need to find your garden and work out in their own little way if it is somewhere that they would like to visit again-or even live in! All you can do is provide them with all the things they would need to be able to survive in your garden and then voila! Your own little wildlife park in your back yard!
