A Guide To Garden Style

A Guide To Garden Style

March 30, 2015

When it comes to planning and designing your garden, often it’s best to start by deciding on a particular style first .Whatever your taste in garden design, there's sure to be a style to suit you and your garden. So here we give a quick guide to some popular garden styles, to get you inspired to transform the look of your garden.

Contemporary Gardens

Contemporary style gardens are a particularly popular approach to garden design, and for good reason. Contemporary gardens are typically more minimalist, than other, more traditional styles, so you don’t need to include lots of plants, making things easier when it comes to maintaining your garden. Crisp, clean, lines lie at the heart of any contemporary garden style, and strong shapes and textures are also essential. A well-designed patio area, perfect for entertaining, can make for a great addition to contemporary style gardens. Here at Verdon Grey we have a great range of luxury garden furniture and garden chair cushions ideal for adding a contemporary look and feel to your garden.

Formal Gardens

You don’t have to own a stately home to have a go at creating a formal garden of your own; indeed there are a number of ways of bringing a more formal style to virtually any garden. And the beautiful, yet simple style of formal gardens make this kind of garden a great option, even for inexperienced gardeners. Classic formal gardens utilise plenty of straight edges and aim to create a balanced and symmetrical look. Central features, such as statues, are also the epitome of formal garden style. Often when designing a formal garden it's best to begin with a focal point that really draws the eye. Flower beds, ordered in geometric formations, can then be arranged around this focal feature. Hedges, in particular, are also great for adding shape and creating borders in formal gardens.

Country-Style Garden

Country-style gardens are typically overflowing with an abundance of plants, and vibrant displays of colour, and tend to have a more relaxed and informal feel. This traditional, romantic style can easily be created using a mixture of different plant varieties, such as roses, wildflowers, shrubs, and even a few fruit and vegetables mixed in too. This garden style also offers great versatility, and can easily be adapted to suit urban gardens too. When designing a country-style garden, try to avoid planting in regimented lines, as the key to emulating this style is to make your flower beds appear as though they are almost overflowing.
