Have a Spring Fling with Your Garden

March 30, 2015

It's almost here! That’s right, after months of dark nights and dreary weather, spring is finally in the air.

The spring season is a time to get busy in your garden. Sure, it’s still a little chilly, but there really is no better time to head outdoors, breathe in the fresh spring air, and get a bit of dirt under your fingernails.

In spring, our gardens undergo a metamorphosis from bare, lifeless space to an inspiring area, budding with life and promise. Whether you’re gardening pro, or still a little green, spring is one of the most exciting times to be a gardener.

If you fancy having a spring fling with your garden, then read on as we take a look at some top tips, perfect for helping you make the most of your garden, now that spring is finally here.

Out with the Old

Even the most manicured gardens need a bit of a tidy up after the winter months. And by sprucing up your garden now, you can reap the rewards once summer finally rolls around.

So make sure to give your garden a good spring clean. Start by clearing any debris from your flower beds and sweeping up any leaves, to get your garden ready to grow.

Now is also the time to start tackling any budding weeds. Get rid of these as soon as they rear their ugly heads, before they have a chance to take hold.

In with the New

Spring is a time to get sowing and growing – so start planting now.

Summer-flowering bulbs such as begonias and alliums are amazingly versatile. They’re real show-stoppers too, adding a splash of exotic colour to any garden. Summer bulbs also take up little space, so you can squeeze them into even the busiest borders.

These flowers should be planted in the spring, when the soil is just beginning to warm up.

As a handy tip, try combining different types of summer bulbs, so you can get a succession of blooms from late spring, right through to the early autumn – blooming lovely!

Get Ready to Mow

The scent of freshly cut grass is another one of spring’s many delights. So dust off your mower and give you grass a good going over – weather-permitting, of course.

Watch Out

Be warned, you’re probably not the only one enjoying the milder weather in your garden. Warmer temperatures will mean the pests are back too.

After this year’s relatively mild winter, experts are predicting that 2015 will be a record year for slugs – and gardeners are being warned to brace themselves for an invasion of the slimy kind.

During the winter months, these slippery fiends have been growing in size, strength and numbers. But now is the time to fight back.

One of the best ways to protect your plants and tackle slug populations is to encourage more natural predators, such as birds and hedgehogs, into your garden. This will help keep slug numbers down, and give native British wildlife a boost.

Furnish Some Furnishings

With the longer days and balmier weather on its way, the spring season should ideally be spent simply enjoying your garden. So why not treat yourself and your garden to some lovely new outdoor furniture.

This is an awesome way to give your garden a facelift for the season ahead. And it’ll allow you to really get the most of your outdoor space.
