Flowers With Very Unusual Names

Flowers With Very Unusual Names

March 30, 2015

Gardeners love to breed their own species of flowers with certain unique characteristics. Once the species has been created, the gardener gets to choose the species name themselves. Although most flowers carry fairly ordinary names, there are some that stand out for being particularly odd. We’ve tracked down some of the most unusual that we could find for this article, but we don’t think you’ll be asking for some of these in your local florist anytime soon!

Flowers for Occasions

In Memory Of My Dog

Flowers are used for many occasions, so it’s no surprise that there are some named after the job that they do. There are some that you may expect, for example the “Golden Wedding” rose, but there are also some very unusual ones. Although pet funerals are not the most common ceremony, there are two roses named “In Memory of My Dog” and “In Memory of My Cat”, so you can remember your pets with the most appropriate flower. There’s even a flower named “40th Anniversary of the Communist Youth League”, but you probably won’t be celebrating that anytime soon.

Food

Nekkid Woman Frying Bacon

Foods are also popular for names of flowers. These range from relatively normal names such as “Pineapple Upside Down Cake”, “Spotted Dick” and “Cheesecake”, to far more bizarre titles like “Nekkid Woman Frying Bacon”, for which we have no absolutely no idea as to the origin. One that stands out is “Greenteaicecreamandraspberries”, with the longest word length permissible (30 letters) for an orchid hybrid name.

Rude Names

Rather oddly, there is a whole collection of flowers with rather rude names. Panties is quite a common theme, with “Lavender Panties”, “Pink Panties”, “Pantie Raid” and “Panties in a Knot” all being names for daylilies. There’s also “Long Legged Lap Dancer”, “Nude Yoga” and “We Dare to Bare” making up the list too. We aren’t sure how these flowers got their names, but we’re certain that they won’t be being used for a formal occasion in a hurry!

Everything Else

 Comangetit

And then there are those that have names not related to anything in particular. Some of these are a play on words such as “Cuz Ur Myon” and “Comangetit”; proving that gardeners actually do have a sense of humour. There’s also a plant called “Improperly Dressed”, which gets its name from its lack of petals, and the patriotic “Osay Canuc” (pronounced “oh say, can you see”). But there are some that have completely inexplicable names, like “Eric’s Wotsit”, “Spoons for Escargot”, “Tokyo Smog” and “Rosedale Tractor Seat”.
