4 Vegetables That Anybody Can Grow

4 Vegetables That Anybody Can Grow

March 30, 2015

Everybody would like to grow their own vegetables and be able to eat food fresh from the plant, but the idea of actually doing it may seem daunting. Well, thankfully there are some vegetables that are easy to grow, even for first-time growers. We’ve created a list of four of these vegetables to help you get on your way to growing your whole meals!

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a great plant for beginners because they grow very fast. This means that you can get the results quickly and won’t lose interest in your new hobby.

There are many varieties of tomato that grow in different conditions. If you want to plant them in hanging baskets, window boxes, or other small containers, choose a variety like Gardener’s Delight. If you want a tomato plant that’s going to grow bigger fruits, then try the Ferline variety.

Peas

Peas are one of the easiest crops to grow, and fresh peas taste so much better than store-bought. They enjoy cooler weather, so you can plant them anywhere between March and June and they’ll thrive just fine.

The only work that they require is a support for their stems. To achieve this, simply erect some chicken wire or netting between supports and the peas will do the rest. This is a plant where the more you pick them, the more they grow.

Mint

In terms of herbs, things don’t get easier to grow than mint. They can grow on almost any type of soil, so you don’t need to worry too much about whether your garden is right for it.

Rather unusually, mint is a plant that can actually grow too much, so it’s a good idea to limit its growth by placing it into a pot rather than directly into the soil. It’s best to use mint fresh from the plant, but you can also freeze the leaves in ice cubes to use later on.

Lettuce

There are so many varieties of lettuce that you could easily grow lettuce all year round and never have a boring salad. Although they’re relatively easy to grow, lettuce is the favourite vegetable of several pets, including sparrows, slugs and snails. This means that a lot of the work you need to do while growing them is guard duty.

Placing chicken wire over your lettuce-growing area will keep the sparrows at bay, and slugs and snails can be kept away using several home-made traps. Slug pellets are best avoided because they contain chemicals which can be harmful to wildlife, children and pets.

These vegetables will help your garden to flourish into an area bursting with colour and life, and help you on the way to the garden of your dreams.
