All Things Bright and Colourful

All Things Bright and Colourful

June 23, 2015

It’s that perfect time of year for any gardener as the sun rears his head and the weather starts to dry up (sort of), so we can’t wait to get into our gardens and start tending to them again. One of our favourite things about the summer months is to see all the extra splashes of colour in the previously dull and neglected beds as many of our bulbs begin to flower in the warmer weather. So what flowers are perfect for creating the garden of many colours and shades?

Allium

These glorious purple spheres are perfect for any garden that’s desperately in need of a splash of colour. The stems are long and thin, so they are great for adding structure and layers to the flowerbeds. Plant these in early autumn and you should be rewarded with some beautiful purple flowers by the time summer comes around.

Begonia

Begonias are a great addition to any garden as they can be particularly hardy, allowing you to plant them and leave them to it until the summer months. They come in an array of colours from pale peaches to hot pinks, so there’s a flower to suit every gardener and their garden.

Dahlia

With so many varieties of this flower, you’re bound to find something that fits in perfectly in your garden. Whether you’re looking for a deep dark red or a pale pretty pink, the Dahlia is the flower to suit all. These are sun-lovers so make sure to find a nice bright spot for your Dahlia’s where they can get plenty of light and show off their beautiful colours.

Freesia

For another flower that offers an array of colours, the Freesia is ideal. This dainty little flower can be found in shades ranging from sunshine yellow to periwinkle blue, and everything in between. For a really colourful garden, mix and match seeds and create a rainbow of Freesia’s in your flowerbeds!

Gladiolus

These tall, colourful flowers can be planted in the spring, and by the time summer arrives, you’ll have a garden full of beautiful plants. The Gladiolus comes in a range of colours from soft lilacs to bold oranges. They can even be found with a multiple colours in one flower, giving a whole new look to your garden. These are also great for clipping and displaying in vases throughout your house.

Iris

The Iris is a perfect addition to the garden, being a hardy and easy-to-grow flower. It comes in a whole range of colours, so no matter what shade you’re after, you’ll be able to find something you love in the Iris. This flower is great for attracting wildlife such as butterflies, so if you’re creating a wildlife-friendly garden, the Iris is an absolute must have!
